I have really had an aversion to the term S.M.A.R.T goals.
I know, I know it's crazy coming from an ex personal trainer / health and wellness coach, right?!
As I tune into this, I think the reason I didn't like it so much is because...
1. I didn't like to choose one goal because I wanted it all RIGHT NOW!
2. I never got the formula right... I was either too vague and not specific or it was something that was really not achievable.
3. I was unable to commit to it probably because it was not the goal I really wanted or it didn't elicit the feelings I thought it would.
This year I was taught something fascinating from my Mentor that I have to share with you because it actually brought excitement to me with setting goals, and ones that were SMART!
One of the most common reasons that people don't reach their goals is because they are expecting a goal, something outside of themselves, to elicit a feeling within themselves. They are focused on the finish line, when I get there I will feel happy, loved, accepted, empowered, strong.... the list goes on. But when you get there, do you actually feel that way?
NOOOOO!!!!
Or if you do, does it last T-minus 60 seconds and then you are on to the next goal?
Why is that? Because external things are not what create the feelings within us. WE create the feelings within us. WE are powerful alchemists!
So let's start goal setting off right by discovering how you can cultivate that feeling within you ADL and create your SMART goals around that feeling, not some external goal you think you want to achieve and how it will make you feel.
Wouldn't it feel amazing to have all the feels along the way? Through the whole goal setting process, not just at the end?
When you are able to connect with these emotional states along the way, you are more apt to keep taking the actions, right?
So remember, as you start your goal setting, your goal needs to start with a feeling, a desired emotional state!
(Which most likely is an unmet need – look how that ties into day 1's email! So we can bypass this “Self Sabotaging” behaviour from the start!)
Then... You can go into the details of what area of your life you would like to achieve your goal in?
Relationships
Business
Health
Finances
Travel
Home
Spirituality
Then... You can set the goal in a SMART goal format!
Then.... You can discover what behaviours and actions you need to take to reach it.
So how is that for you? A new perspective to look at goals from...
So it is more like a deep internal process to get connected to what emotional state you really want to feel,
Or it can be a reverse engineering process going from what you think you want to achieve and discovering what feeling you are trying to cultivate within you.
